Lady's dress in the 19th century came with several different outfit changes each day. You had a morning dress and an evening dress. For a lady's morning dress you would either wear light airy colors or dark colored calico or even wool, and of course you have to be modest so you cant show anything that mama would not want you showing. For a lady's evening dress you can show a little more skin than you would in the morning and you would be more dressed up and put your hair in some sort of up-do, your dress would be more elegant and low-cut. Your underclothes play a big role of what kind of dresses you can wear if you wear the correct clothes then your body would show off really good. As a woman you have to have several layers of clothing, the first layer of clothing would be a shift which is a simple dress, then on top of your shift would be your corset to tighten in your waist, next would be a petticoat which is made out of wool for warmth or even silk.
For outerwear you would have a long coat that is called a pelisse and it covers your whole body and touches the ground. If you have a high wasted gown then you would wear something called a spencer which would cover your sleeves and your bodice. If a woman was going to wear a showing ball gown then she would wear a cloak.
Of course you have to have accessories. If you are going anywhere you have to have on gloves so you have perfect skin. Caps are worn for married women and they are saying that they don't need another relationship that they are in one. Bonnets and Hats are worn most every time you go outside but if you have a fancy up-do then you do not need a hat. For footwear women normally wear slippers if they are going to a ball, but if you are going riding or walking you normally wear half-boots.
